President's Message

Dear Members & Supporters,
The Keyport Historical Society is moving forward in our attempts to rebuild our beloved museum.   The process is going to take time and our first order of business was recovering as many items after the storm as possible.    Items we thought we would never see again are now in our storage area or in our DPW container and items are continuing to be found!  During the demolition of the Ye Cottage Inn, a worker and one of our members salvaged many items from this iconic Keyport restaurant and we are proud to have these items in storage to be added to our collection.

We have been attempting to inventory items that are kindly being held by other organizations as well as  comparing  items salvaged after the storm to our catalogue cards that were miraculously salvaged AFTER the storm as well, to discover what part of the collections survived.  This, as well as cleaning items, has been a daunting task and we would like to thank all that have helped start the process moving forward.   National Guard Militia Museum members donated their time and equipment to vacuum our military textiles and stabilize other military items, after members brushed each item in preparation of their arrival.  Members have gone out of their way to obtain estimates on cost to stabilize items to make sure we met our FEMA requirements.

Our next order of business was to put our claims in to our insurance company as well as FEMA to attempt to recoup some of our losses.  Key members took charge and worked diligently to make sure we met the deadlines for our FEMA application as well as provided all necessary documentation to both the insurance company and to FEMA.  We will use these monies to purchase/pay for necessary items to keep the Historical Society up and running until we can find a new permanent museum and a way to finance it.

The Senior Center in Keyport has been kind enough to be our "home away from home" and allow us to use their facilities on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month to hold our historical presentations as well as our open Board Meetings until such time as we find a new place.  (Our next presentation on July 1 at 7.30 pm includes Dan Lieb of the NJ Historical Divers Association speaking on the "Vivian Wreck". (Please check our schedule for all upcoming presentations and fundraisers) The Keyport Historical Society is happy that we can continue to provide free monthly presentations to all who are interested and keep Keyport's vibrant history alive even while facing such a trying time!

We also have been fund raising  in various ways, including an Ice Cream Social at Uncle Louie G's Italian Ices & Ice Cream in June and setting up a table during Historic Weekend Monmouth County at The Fire Museum, on Community Day as well as at the Library during the Garden Walk.  As part of our fundraising efforts we have T-Shirts sizes M-2XL, 1894 Maps of Keyport as well as Mrs. Walling's famous homemade cards to sell at our presentations as well as other events.  We will hold our annual Art and Craft Sale & Show on September 14, 2013 from 9-4, selling spaces for $10.00 each to all interested artists and those who do homemade crafts as well as have our Victorian Tea on October 19 at the Yacht Club and our Candlelit House Tour on December 14, 2013.
