KEY PORT’S SCHOOLS
The KEY PORT COMPANY gave a lot on Church Street for the first School House and later it was used by the Methodist Church. Early Prayer Meetings were held in Nimrod Bedle's home for the Methodists.
The Key Port Academy was a private school run by Professor George W. Holmes, an expert teacher, about 1862–1892, in a building on the corner of East Front and Church Streets, across from West's Furniture now.
It has been told that the building on Elizabeth Street where Judson Hopla and his family lived was once a school.
The Rev. George S. Wharton, who was also an excellent teacher, had classes on the site of the old Mansion House.
In 1871–72 the KEY PORT GRADED SCHOOL was built and in 1878 the High School section was added. This was a very busy school but was razed in 1968 after the new Central School was built.
On March 29, 1901 the first BOARD OF EDUCATION met and organized by election of Benjamin B. Ogden as Chairman and Garrett S. Jones as district clerk.
