Keyport Historical Society Origins

Preserving Keyport’s History Through Generations

The origins of the Keyport Historical Society are deeply rooted in the town's commitment to preserving its rich history. The journey began as the ownership of the Kearney Mansion changed hands over the years, ultimately leading to its abandonment and neglect.

1972

In 1972, a passionate group of Keyport residents came together to form the Keyport Historical Society, united by a shared vision of safeguarding their town's heritage.

Rescue

Their earliest efforts involved salvaging historical items from the Kearney Mansion, recognizing the imminent demolition of this historic structure. These rescued artifacts inspired the society to preserve and share Keyport’s history.

2012—Steamboat Dock Museum

A significant turning point occurred in 1976 when the Steamboat Dock Museum was inaugurated. Located at the intersection of Broad Street and American Legion Drive, the building once belonged to the Keansburg Steamboat Company and had originally served as a machine shop, tool storage area, and lodging for steamboat operations.

In 2012, despite great preparation to remove and elevate critical artifacts above what was consider high flood levels, Superstorm Sandy destroyed the entire structure. Even its reinforced cinder block wall were no match for the wrath of Mother Nature. Despite this tragedy, dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to salvage what they could. These volunteers included people who were dealing with their own storm damage.

2012—2015

The KHS Board of Directors searched for a suitable new home for the Society and a way to fund such an endeavor. Industrious and dedicated members were able to secure a Post-Sandy Revitalization Grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to purchase the current museum property at 34 Main Street.

But, obtaining a location was just the beginning. A lot of work and working capital went into converting the building into an accessible and viable museum space.

Today

Today, the Keyport Historical Society stands as a living testament to the enduring spirit of Keyport and its dedication to its historical legacy.
